COURSE OFFERINGS

EDCP 217 (formerly EDCP 317) – Introduction to Leadership
The purpose of this course is to introduce students to a variety of leadership theories, and concepts drawn from multiple disciplines. Students will come to understand the concept of relational leadership and how it differs from traditional/industrial leadership theories. The course includes the study of leadership as well as the application of leadership theories, concepts, and skills. Students will complete personal and leadership self-assessments, values exploration, and leadership skill practice through small group application.

EDCP 315 (NEW course this spring) – Leadership in Groups and Organizations
The purpose of this course is for students to acquire and integrate leadership theories and concepts within group and organizational contexts. Students will learn to navigate group and organizational environments and apply leadership in diverse communities of practice and career contexts.

EDCP 318 – Applied Contextual Leadership
The courses address how leadership models and theories are applied in specific contexts. In-depth study and analysis on the context and its relationship to leadership will be the basis for the course. Topics may include:

Leadership and Community Service – Course designed to examine the relationships between service and socially responsible leadership. Students will engage in community service and critical reflection in order to gain a deeper understanding of issues related to diversity, social justice, community, and civic engagement. This class is not being offered in the spring semester.

Constituent-Based Leadership – Course designed for Student Government legislators that focuses on the unique nature of leadership in a constituent-based organization. Connections between leadership, university governance, operations, and functions will be explored.

EDCP 418 – Leadership & Identity
The special topics and leadership course will address a single topic related to leadership throughout the semester. In-depth study and analysis on the topic and its relationship to leadership will be the basis for the course. Topics for this spring semester include:

Asian American Leadership: Influences and Issues - Students enrolled in this class will have the opportunity to examine how the Asian American identity impacts leadership style. Students will study issues of activism, culture and history as they relate to leadership and Asian Americans.

Latina and Latino Leadership – Students enrolled in this class will have the opportunity to examine how Latina and Latino identity impacts leadership style. Students will study issues of activism, culture and history as they relate to leadership and Latina and Latino culture.

Black Student Leadership - Students enrolled in this class examine the effect of race and ethnicity on leadership. Specifically, they explore the concepts and differing meanings of "leader and leadership" within the African-American community and society at large.

Women’s Leadership - Students will develop an understanding of women’s leadership and women’s ways of influencing organizations. Participants will explore the dynamic of power and leadership and how women’s development and psychological theory have influenced both of these constructs.

LGBT Leadership – In this course students will explore several different aspects of leadership within the LGBT community, as well as being an LGBT leader. Students will be challenged to think about their role as a leader in addition to gaining knowledge of the history and theory of LGBT leadership.

American Indian Leadership – Students enrolled in this class will have the opportunity to examine how the American Indian identity impacts leadership style. Students will study issues of activism, culture and history as they relate to leadership and American Indians.

Jewish Leadership – Students enrolled in this class will have the opportunity to examine how Jewish racial, ethnic, and cultural identity impacts leadership. Students will study issues of activism, culture and history as they relate to leadership and Jewish people.

EDCP 417 – Advanced Leadership Seminar
In this course, students will analyze and synthesize the concept of leadership using cultural, ethical, sociological, and historical perspectives. Exploration and reflection of personal values, decision-making, and in-depth analysis of various leadership themes will take place in course activities.
