COLLEGE PARK, MD--The University of Maryland's Union Gallery presents Show and/or Tell, an exhibition of contemporary painting and sculpture by five artists representing three consecutive graduating classes from the Master of Fine Arts program at the university.
Show and/or Tell, which runs from Feb. 10-March 18, exposes current tensions in the art world between an artist's object-making focus and a conceptual storytelling focus. Participating artists are current Master of Fine Arts candidates Steve Amos, Perry Johnson and Barry Scott, and university alumni and Department of Art Adjunct Professors, Jeffry Cudlin and Chris Hoeting. Cudlin and Hoeting also serve as Show and/or Tell co-curators.
"There's traces of personal narrative and whimsy running through this exhibition, and there's a definite engagement with everyday life, so people can really just come to see some new, vibrant work and think about how the fine arts work in the present tense--what painting can do now or what sculpture can do now," said Cudlin.
Exhibition events include an opening reception on Feb. 10 from 5 p.m.-7 p.m., tours of participating artists' studios and a panel discussion entitled, Meeting Places: Cross-Disciplinary Thinking in Contemporary Artmaking Practices on Feb. 24 from 5 p.m.-6:30 p.m. (Click here for more event information.)
This exhibition is sponsored in part by the Pepsi Enhancement Fund.
The Union Gallery is located on the first floor of the Stamp Student Union on the campus of the University of Maryland. Hours are 10:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
