COLLEGE PARK, MD - The University of Maryland's Union Gallery presents Midpoint: 2nd Year MFA Candidates at the University of Maryland on display March 30 - April 20, 2006. The exhibition displays the work of four artists -Peter Gordon, Ben Lock, Brian Sykes, and Adam White - all halfway through the University's distinctive three-year Masters of Fine Arts program. An opening reception for the exhibition will be held Thursday, March 30th, 6-8 PM.
Midpoint presents the four artists at a pivotal point in their development and highlights the influence of the MFA program on their work. As Jack Livingston, editor of Radar, a Baltimore Arts and Culture Magazine, wrote in the exhibition essay, "Individuality is highly valued, however, some similarities naturally result. Physicality of materials, strength of concept, and quality of execution are aspects incorporated within the works of each of these artists. Beyond that their paths diverge.
Four energetic canvases by Peter Gordon are filled with a surprising array of abstract layers and gradations of texture. Adam White's tissue paper installation and intricate wall sized drawing demonstrate his interest in repetitive forms and delicate structures. Brian Sykes explores the changing rural landscape through oversized pieces such as Silo, a towering construction of plastic-wrapped straw bales. And in his steel and iron sculptures, Benjamin Lock examines ideas of containment through the combination of rigid forms with seemingly raw materials.
The Union Gallery is supported in part by a grant from the Prince George's Arts Council, PGAC Super Circle, and the Maryland National Capital Park & Planning Commission.
The Union Gallery is located on the first floor of the Stamp Student Union on the campus of the University of Maryland, College Park. Admission to the exhibition is free and open to the public. Hours are 10:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
