COLLEGE PARK, MD--The Philip Merrill College of Journalism and the Union Gallery at the University of Maryland present Emory Kristof: Around the World in 800,000 Chromes , an exhibition of work by the National Geographic photographer and '64 journalism alumnus Emory Kristof.

The exhibit, which runs from Sept. 21 to Nov. 2, shows highlights from the portfolio of this internationally renowned photojournalist, who estimates he has developed more than 800,000 images from his travels circumnavigating the globe numerous times.   An opening reception will be held on Thursday, September 21 st , 5-7 pm.

Kristof's main passion is shooting the "shipwrecks and seamonsters" of the deep sea. He was on the expedition that discovered and shot some of the first images of the Titanic wreckage, photographed an eight-meter Pacific sleeper shark at 1,300 meters (the largest animal ever seen in the deep through a submarine porthole) and has been innovative in bringing three-dimensional imaging under the sea.

"There is kilometer after kilometer of deep water out there covering 70 percent of our planet, but we know more about the surface of the moon, and now Mars, than we do about most of our own world," said Kristof in a TERP magazine interview.

The exhibit will be representative of Kristof's work, including his early days at the University as editor of the yearbook and humor magazine, his seven National Geographic cover shots, the work in the deep sea and farthest corners of the world, as well as the remarkable engineering behind the shots.

The Union Gallery is located on the first floor of the Stamp Student Union on the campus of the University of Maryland, College Park. Admission to the exhibition is free and open to the public. Hours are 10:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday; Friday 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.; Saturday 11:00 a.m-5:00 p.m.
