Asian American Organizations 2007-2008

Asian American Student Union (AASU)

The mission of the Asian American Student Union is to provide service, representation, and advocacy for the Asian Pacific American community at the University of Maryland.

The AASU is a coordinating organization for all APA students on campus. The purpose of the AASU is to:

• Build a united APA community
• Promote activism, pride, and awareness of APA culture and heritage
• Educate all students about APA issues
• Fight all incidents of discrimination and injustice against all students of color

AASU activities and initiatives include:

Freshmen Council
Freshmen Council provides a way for freshmen to develop their leadership and get involved with AASU during their first year.

Yuri Kochiyama (YK) Award for Excellence
The YK award for excellence in leadership is given to recognize the efforts and achievements of APA high school students.

The PublicAsian
The PublicAsian is a campus newspaper which represents the voice of APA students on campus.

Asian American Sisters Pride Integrity Respect (AASPIRE)
AASPIRE serves as a voice and support group for APA women on campus.

Working for an Asian American Studies Program (WAASP)
WAASP serves as a vehicle for promoting and strengthening the Asian American Studies Program.

Community Service Initiatives
As a critical part of its mission, AASU actively promotes involvement and service in the local community.

Anokha is a unique co-ed vocal group that promotes Indian and American culture through songs and music.


Bengali Student Association (BSA)

Chinese Culture Club (CCC)

1. Promoting awareness of Taiwanese/Taiwanese American culture, language, history, and current affairs
2. Serving as the liaison for the Taiwanese/Taiwanese American individuals at the University of Maryland, College Park
3. Providing the forum needed for the exchange of information, ideas, and feelings among individuals of the Taiwanese/Taiwanese American community
4. Informing students/members at the university on the various political views in the Taiwanese Community
5. Supporting social and educational events and developing programs that will benefit the Taiwanese/Taiwanese American community as a whole
6. Developing a strong relationship with other organizations at the University of Maryland, with the University Administration, and with other organizations nationwide, in order to communicate and fulfill our needs and goals.
