Thomas Bevans has over 20 years of teaching experience (with 10 years as a respected Teacher at Chevy Chase Ballroom.) Thomas is adept at Group International Latin and American Style Ballroom classes.
Barbara Bernstein received a Ph.D. in Education from the University of Maryland, and also has extensive dance training including Ballroom, Salsa/Rueda, and Foreign Folk dance. She has taught all over the DC area, as well as performing and/or teaching in Puerto Rico, Canada, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, etc. She produced and performed in shows for the Kennedy Center, the Verizon Center, the Washington, D.C. Convention Center, and countless other local venues. For her efforts she received the "Annual Tribute To Women in Salsa" Award for "outstanding dedication to the promotion of a vibrant Salsa community." And she was chosen to judge the "World Salsa/Rueda Championship Contest" at the first two annual competitions (in 2004 and the 2005) at the Salsa Rueda Congress in Miami. In August 2007, her team performed and Bernstein taught a workshop at the prestigious Miami Salsa Congress, which draws dancers from all over the world! Likewise she performed and taught at the Puerto Rico Salsa Congress in July, 2008, one of the biggest Salsa events in the world.
Dan Calloway A Dual Fellow of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD), Dan Calloway has been teaching Ballroom Dancing for more than 20 years. He dances competitively in International-Style Latin.
Roberto Tapia (Instructor Busho) has been training with Capoeira Sul da Bahia for over 14 years in Chile and Brazil under the direction of Contra-Mestre Maxuel and Mestre Railson. Since moving to D.C., Roberto has spent the past four years teaching Capoeira to students at the University of Maryland and American University and now has a dedicated group of capoeristas that train throughout the week at his own studio "RODA Movements". Roberto has annually organized Batizados (Graduation Ceremonies) where the mestres, professors, and capoeiristas of all levels participate in traditional dances as well as open rodas to initiate students with higher belts (as in other martial arts disciplines). Mestres and professors come from Brazil, France, Canada, and California to participate in these events, and this year will mark the fourth batizado of Roberto’s students. This year Roberto received the cord of instructor in Brazil at the 4th International Capoeira Sul da Bahia event.
Roberto works with students of all ages and has several afterschool programs and children’s classes in DC and MD. Additionally, Roberto organizes and performs in demonstrations and workshops across the DC metropolitan area and is passionate about passing on the rich culture and tradition of Capoeira.

Gina Mai Denn has been teaching the pottery wheel to beginners for 10 years, as well as intermediate wheel and hand building with clay. She graduated from Alfred University in upstate New York in 1991 with a Bachelors in Fine Arts with Ceramic Art as her major. She moved to Maryland a couple of years after college and found a place to do pottery at the University of Maryland's Art and Learning Center. Within a couple of more years she started teaching at the Greenbelt Community Center's new ceramics studios. We are pleased to have Gina back at the ALC.
Fidel E. González has been dancing since he was a child in Ecuador and taught for both Arthur Murray and Dance World Studios. He has taught all styles in studios and privately for close to 20 years. Today he is a sought-after private instructor in the DC metro area. Competent and well grounded in all styles of dance, it is the Latin dances, especially Salsa, Cha Cha, Rumba, Merengue and Bachata that remain particularly close to his heart.
Peter Holden has exhibited clay sculpture in group and solo shows in New York and Maryland beginning in 1987. He has also participated area craft shows with functional stoneware and majolica glazed pottery. He maintains a home-based pottery studio and has taught at the Art & Learning Center for twelve years.
Katie Baseman has been studying music since age 9 beginning on the flute and branching to the guitar. She has studied both instruments extensively incorporating many genres in her playing. Ms. Baseman completed her Bachelor of Music degree at Towson University where she studied with Sara Nichols. Ms. Baseman is an active performer on both instruments. Her public performances include but are not limited to performing as principal flutist in the Towson University Orchestra, playing on the American premier of the Hart Concerto with the TU Big Band, solo recitals, performing in various pit orchestras for local operas and musicals and chamber ensembles. As well a local performer, Ms. Baseman operates a private studio in the Baltimore area where she teaches both flute and guitar lessons to students of all ages and ability levels. She lives in Baltimore and is currently seeking her Masters degree in Music Pedagogy.
Juan Rojo was born in Valladolid, Spain in 1977. He graduated from the University of Salamanca (Spain) with a degree in Fine Arts and he obtained his Masters degree in painting and video at the University of Maryland. He has exhibited in the USA and internationally and his work combines a traditional understanding of painting with the use of new media like video, digital printing or digital manipulation of images. He is currently working and living in Washington D.C.
Kumud Mathur has been performing and teaching dance in the Metro Washington DC Area for over 20 years. She is teaching Bhangra, Bollywood dances and Laughter Yoga fitness in Montgomery County Department of Recreation since 2001. She is also teaching dance at Trinity University and Art and Learning Center of Maryland University.
She has a Diploma/certificate in Indian dances and drums from Music Academy of India and BS degree in Dance, Math and Economics from University of Rajasthan.

She is a practicing mathematician. Thus designs and choreographs the dances beautifully. She also teaches Laughter Yoga Fitness to provide instant happiness.

Karen Trimble American Style Fred Astaire National Dance Association Specialist Diploma; Gold level dance director, specialist in the International Style. Qualified to coach and adjudicate at championship level in all four disciplines.
Lucia Lima has an M.A. in Dance from New York University. She has been teaching yoga, modern dance and Brazilian forro (new class) for five years at the Art and Learning Center. Lucia's yoga training is Hatha yoga based. Her yoga practice is informed by the Integral Yoga of Sri Aurobindo which she has studied for many years. She has been a dance and yoga instructor at the Jewish Community Centers of Rockville and Washington D.C., at the Black Rock Center for the Arts and many studios and schools in the area. She has also taught extensively in her native city Recife, Brazil.
Ryan Areu has over 10 years of experience developing web pages and web applications. After graduating from the Robert H. Smith School of Business, Ryan has been working at the Stamp Student Union as their IT Systems Manager since 2002. He is in charge of the Stamp web site as well as various other websites for many units within the Stamp. Ryan, along with his wife, also runs a web development and photography company (Coveted Technologies, LLC). In addition, Ryan is currently pursuing a Master of Information Management degree here at the University of Maryland.
Kristie Jackson graduated from the University of Maryland College Park with a degree in Art Studio and a concentration in Graphic Design. She has served as a Graphic Designer in the Adele H. Stamp Student Union - Center for Campus Life for three years. Recently, she was awarded the ACUI Region 4 UDIDWHAT first place prize for her MD Student Affairs Conference Materials. She specializes in Adobe CS4 and is an avid illustrator.She has much experience teaching inner-city children and college-aged students.
Janice Bauer has been doing ceramic arts since the fall of 2002, when she took a ceramics class just for fun, as break from her engineering studies. Since then she has immersed herself in clay, specializing in glaze chemistry and firing techniques, with an emphasis on Raku. Her work has won a number of awards at area art shows, and she has been teaching ceramics since 2004. She teaches all aspects of ceramic arts, from hand building to wheel throwing to various firing techniques to glaze chemistry.
