Paddle around the Monuments

Meet at Outdoor Recreation Center
Location: Washington D.C.
Cost: $15 per person
Join Graduate Student Life and the Outdoor Recreation Center and view the monuments and historic areas of DC from a new angle: a canoe! We will paddle our canoes around Teddy Roosevelt Island, along the Lincoln Memorial and near Georgetown. We will then break for lunch and a short hike on Roosevelt Island. No prior paddling experience necessary. Transportation will be provided; please bring a bag lunch. Limit one guest per student.

Newseum

Join Graduate Student Life in touring the brand new Newseum, the “world’s most interactive museum”. The Newseum offers an experience that blends five centuries of news history with up-to-the-second technology and hands-on exhibits. With seven levels of galleries, theaters, and retail spaces it offers a unique environment that takes museumgoers behind the scenes to experience how and why news is made. Tickets are just $10 and will be on sale beginning Monday, June 30, at 12 noon.

Read this information before proceeding to the ticket waitlist process.
Due to the level of interest anticipated for this event, we will be using a ticket reservation system, followed by a separate payment process.
- We will take online reservations for the 20 available tickets on a first-come, first-serve basis, based on transaction completion time. After all the tickets have been reserved, students may sign up on a waitlist.
- Reservations are NOT a guarantee that you have tickets. Please note that while the website might indicate there are tickets available when you begin to fill out your sign-up form, if multiple people are logged on and submit their forms before you, it is possible that no tickets will be available by the time you complete your form. In such a circumstance, you will be automatically put on the waitlist in order of your transaction completion time.
- Those who are first to reserve the 20 available tickets will be notified by email to complete a separate payment process (payable by credit card only; purchases are non-refundable). Payments must be completed within 72 hours of notification or the reservation will be canceled. The tickets will then be offered to the next person on the waitlist.
- If a student on the waitlist is offered tickets, s/he will be instructed to fill out an online reservation form and complete payment online within 72 hours of notification.
- Those who have purchased tickets will be notified when the tickets will be ready for pick-up. Tickets must be picked up in person by the student who reserved and purchased them; ID is required. Tickets cannot be mailed or delivered day-of the event. The tickets will be available for pick-up at the Office of Campus Programs in 0110 Stamp Student Union, Monday-Friday, 10:00am-4:00pm, after GSL has sent notification.

Live Jazz in the Sculpture Garden

Location: National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden
Come unwind from a hectic week listening to live jazz at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden on Friday, June 27 at 5pm. Orquestra La Leyenda will be playing Caribbean Jazz music, and the café will be open, offering sandwiches, salads and beverages (such as sodas, sangria, wine, and beer). Feel free to bring blankets and food along; outside alcohol is not permitted.

Ice Skating at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden

Location: National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden
Come celebrate winter with Graduate Student Life with ice skating at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden on Saturday, February 9, 2008. Join other graduate students at the Pavilion Cafe housed at the National Gallery of Art on the Mall for lunch. We will stake out some tables near the entrance to the cafe. It is a great space and serves freshly made wraps, sandwiches, gourmet pizzas and salads. Coffee, tea, and hot chocolate are also available. At 1:30 we will then head to the Sculpture Garden for two hours of ice-skating (feel free to just come to ice skate too!)
Admission is $7 for adults, $6 for students (with valid id) and children 12 and under; skate rental is $3 (id required). Please RSVP to Laura Polk at lpolk2@umd.edu with your name, department, and the number of people you plan on bringing with you (there is no limit).

Introduction to Wine Tasting

Interested in learning more about wine? Join Graduate Student Life at the University of Maryland Golf Course for an Introduction to Wine Tasting workshop. A wine expert will lead us through a tasting of five wines (including both reds and whites) and will provide you with a chance to compare and contrast “heavier” and “lighter” wines and discover your own palate. Light hors d’oeuvres will be provided. After the tasting, you will have a chance to mingle with other graduate students. A cash bar will be available to purchase additional glasses of the featured wines ($5.00-7.50), as well as sodas ($2.00).
Reservations are required; limit one guest per student.

Hiking at Shenandoah National Park

Halloween High Heel Race

Location: Dupont Circle (17th Street, NW, between R and Church Streets), Washington, DC Cost: FREE
You’ve never seen a 50-yard dash like this! Come see a bunch of well balanced Washingtonians say goodbye to sneakers and hello to heels: it’s the annual Halloween High Heel race! A popular local tradition, this annual neighborhood event features elaborately costumed contestants racing down 17th Street (from R to Church Streets) and attracts a large crowd eager to cheer them on.
The race begins at 9:00pm, but the real fun takes place before the main event, as the contestants parade up and down the race course showing off their outfits starting around 7:30pm.
We will be meeting at College Park metro station at 5:45pm in order to get there early and stake out a good spot. You can also meet us at the corner of 17th and Q Sts at 6:45pm. Corcoran Gallery Tour: Ansel Adams and Annie Leibovitz

Shear Madness

Tour of National Aquarium

Take a trip with Graduate Student Life to Baltimore to visit the National Aquarium, described by the Washington Post as one of the region’s world-class family attractions. After the tour, we will have lunch together in the Inner Harbor.

International Spy Museum Tour

Kiss Me Kate - Musical

Hiking and Sightseeing trip to Harpers Ferry, WV

Summer is finally here! Join Graduate Student Life and the
Outdoor Recreation Center for a day of hiking and sightseeing
in beautiful Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.
We’ll spend the morning hiking a portion of the scenic
Appalachian Trail, which stretches 2,174 miles, through the
Appalachian Mountains from Mount Katahdin, Maine, all the
way to Springer Mountain, Georgia. Lunch will be on the trail;
please bring along a sack lunch and snacks (such as trail
mix).
After lunch, we’ll spend a couple hours exploring the
shops and museums of the historic town of Harpers Ferry, so
bring along spending money for souvenirs.
This is an all-day event; we’ll leave from the Outdoor
Recreation Center at 8:00am and will return about 6:00pm.

Garden features an eclectic mix of top Washington-area jazz
artists. Concerts take place in front of the Pavilion Café
next to the grand reflecting pool and fountain. The café
also offers a seasonal light fare menu and beverages (such
as sodas, sangria, wine, and beer). Feel free to bring blankets

popular way of celebrating the last days of summer in Washington,
DC. You will learn how to move your body to the "funk
and soaring soul grooves" of Sharon Jones and the Dap

the Kennedy Center at 8:00pm (we will meet outside of the
far most right entrance when facing the Kennedy Center). Lessons

Few places on Earth are as beautiful as the
Shenandoah Valley in autumn. First, we will explore the spectacular
underground world and stunning geology of Luray Caverns, the
largest caverns on the east coast of the United States. Pictures
do the caverns no justice, but for more info check out www.luraycaverns.com/about.htm.
Following lunch in Luray, we will drive to
the top of the mountains of the Shenandoah National Park and
embark on a scenic hike through wilderness to Overall Run
Falls, a dazzling 93-foot tall waterfall. The total roundtrip
hike is 6.5 miles and has some challenging sections along
the way. You may also choose to do a shorter hike.
This is a studying-friendly trip! The van
ride will be about 2.5 hours each way, which gives you five
good hours to study for your classes. Spend the rest of the
day meeting other students, discovering amazing nature, and
forgetting about your research. You must wear your clothes
in layers in case you get hot or cold and comfortable shoes
for hiking. Also, bring a water bottle and pack a lunch and
dinner or bring money for food along the way. Spaces are limited.

with salsa! On Monday, May 15, we will join other Washingtonians
for a free salsa lesson at the Lucky Bar by one of the best
known instructors in the area. Lucky Bar is a great place
for beginners and experts alike to enjoy “el ritmo latino.”
And, there is no better way to bond with your fellow graduate
students than by stepping on one another’s toes!
The lesson begins around 8:00 PM and lasts about an hour.
And you don’t need a partner! Then, it’s time
to put what you’ve learned into action, with open dancing
lasting until 1 AM. We are planning to stake out the corner
lounge area by the pool tables in the back bar for those who
need intermittent rest. There is no cover, but please remember
your ID’s (21+). Plus, there is a new dress code that
you must follow: no hats, sneakers, baggy pants or bandanas.
The Lucky Bar is an easy walk from both the Dupont Circle
and Farragut North metro stations on the redline. The address

The Segway is the first of its kind—a
self-balancing, personal transportation device that's designed
to operate in any pedestrian environment. The tour begins
and ends at 1455 Pennsylvania Avenue (close to Metro Center
stop). After 30-45 minutes of training, the tour will start

outside of DC”, “just a few miles from DC”,
but how much do we really know about what this city offers,
its history and the amazing places that make up our Nation’s
Capital?
On Saturday, April 9, the day of the
Cherry Blossom Festival, when the city should be in peak bloom,
UMD grad students will be taking the typical DC City Tour
to a new level – the level of the Segway! We have wiped
the DC City Segway Tour company clean to rent all 20 of their
Segways for a 4 hour private tour of the most exciting, beautiful
and historical places in DC. The Segway is the first of its
kind—a self-balancing, personal transportation device
that's designed to operate in any pedestrian environment.
We will be accompanied by a well-informed guide who has tons
of interesting tidbits, knows all of the important facts and
understands the Segways in and out! Get ready to feel like
a celebrity, because, as we glide by, everyone will be looking.
