Paddle around the Monuments
Saturday, July 26, 2008 from 7:30am to 3:30pm
Meet at Outdoor Recreation Center
Location: Washington D.C.
Cost: $15 per person
Join Graduate Student Life and the Outdoor Recreation Center and view the monuments and historic areas of DC from a new angle: a canoe! We will paddle our canoes around Teddy Roosevelt Island, along the Lincoln Memorial and near Georgetown. We will then break for lunch and a short hike on Roosevelt Island. No prior paddling experience necessary. Transportation will be provided; please bring a bag lunch. Limit one guest per student.

Due to the level of interest anticipated for this event, we will be using a ticket reservation system, followed by a separate payment process.
- We will take online reservations for the 20 available tickets on a first-come, first-serve basis, based on transaction completion time. After all the tickets have been reserved, students may sign up on a waitlist.
- Reservations are NOT a guarantee that you have tickets. Please note that while the website might indicate there are tickets available when you begin to fill out your sign-up form, if multiple people are logged on and submit their forms before you, it is possible that no tickets will be available by the time you complete your form. In such a circumstance, you will be automatically put on the waitlist in order of your transaction completion time.

Newseum

Join Graduate Student Life in touring the brand new Newseum, the “world’s most interactive museum”. The Newseum offers an experience that blends five centuries of news history with up-to-the-second technology and hands-on exhibits. With seven levels of galleries, theaters, and retail spaces it offers a unique environment that takes museumgoers behind the scenes to experience how and why news is made. Tickets are just $10 and will be on sale beginning Monday, June 30, at 12 noon.

Live Jazz in the Sculpture Garden
Friday, June 27, 2008 at 5pm.
Location: National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden
Come unwind from a hectic week listening to live jazz at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden on Friday, June 27 at 5pm. Orquestra La Leyenda will be playing Caribbean Jazz music, and the café will be open, offering sandwiches, salads and beverages (such as sodas, sangria, wine, and beer). Feel free to bring blankets and food along; outside alcohol is not permitted.

Ice Skating at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden

Location: National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden
Come celebrate winter with Graduate Student Life with ice skating at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden on Saturday, February 9, 2008. Join other graduate students at the Pavilion Cafe housed at the National Gallery of Art on the Mall for lunch. We will stake out some tables near the entrance to the cafe. It is a great space and serves freshly made wraps, sandwiches, gourmet pizzas and salads. Coffee, tea, and hot chocolate are also available. At 1:30 we will then head to the Sculpture Garden for two hours of ice-skating (feel free to just come to ice skate too!)
Admission is $7 for adults, $6 for students (with valid id) and children 12 and under; skate rental is $3 (id required). Please RSVP to Laura Polk at lpolk2@umd.edu with your name, department, and the number of people you plan on bringing with you (there is no limit).

Introduction to Wine Tasting

Location: University of Maryland, Golf Course
Cost: $25 per person
Interested in learning more about wine? Join Graduate Student Life at the University of Maryland Golf Course for an Introduction to Wine Tasting workshop. A wine expert will lead us through a tasting of five wines (including both reds and whites) and will provide you with a chance to compare and contrast “heavier” and “lighter” wines and discover your own palate. Light hors d’oeuvres will be provided. After the tasting, you will have a chance to mingle with other graduate students. A cash bar will be available to purchase additional glasses of the featured wines ($5.00-7.50), as well as sodas ($2.00).
Reservations are required; limit one guest per student.

Hiking at Shenandoah National Park

Join Graduate Student Life hiking Old Rag Mountain in Shenandoah National Park. Old Rag Mountain is one of the highest peaks (3291 feet) in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Its bald summit commands a spectacular view of the Piedmont to the east and the Shenandoah Valley to the west. Cost includes transportation, park fees, and experienced guides. Halloween High Heel Race

Location: Dupont Circle (17th Street, NW, between R and Church Streets), Washington, DC Cost: FREE
Youâve never seen a 50-yard dash like this! Come see a bunch of well balanced Washingtonians say goodbye to sneakers and hello to heels: itâs the annual Halloween High Heel race! A popular local tradition, this annual neighborhood event features elaborately costumed contestants racing down 17th Street (from R to Church Streets) and attracts a large crowd eager to cheer them on.
The race begins at 9:00pm, but the real fun takes place before the main event, as the contestants parade up and down the race course showing off their outfits starting around 7:30pm.
We will be meeting at College Park metro station at 5:45pm in order to get there early and stake out a good spot. You can also meet us at the corner of 17th and Q Sts at 6:45pm. This event is FREE, however please respond to Laura Polk at lpolk2@umd.edu and give your name, department, and the number of people you plan on bringing (there is no limit).

Corcoran Gallery Tour: Ansel Adams and Annie Leibovitz

Join Graduate Student Life for a visit to the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washingtonâs oldest art museum, to see the Ansel Adams and Annie Leibovitz photography exhibits. The visit will include a guided tour focusing on the unique and innovative style of Ansel Adamsâ landscape photography, as well as time to view over 200 portraits from Annie Leibovitz, who is considered one of the Americaâs best portrait photographers. Shear Madness

Set in a hairstyling salon that is the scene of a wacky murder, the audience gets to solve the crime. Tour of National Aquarium

Meet at Union Lane by Adele H. Stamp Student Union at 8:30am
Location: Baltimore, MD
Cost: $15 per person
Take a trip with Graduate Student Life to Baltimore to visit the National Aquarium, described by the Washington Post as one of the regionâs world-class family attractions. Cost for this event, which includes admission to the museum and dolphin show and transportation from campus, is just $15 per person ($30 value; no refunds or discounts). After the tour, we will have lunch together in the Inner Harbor.
We will meet at Union Lane (between Stamp Student Union and Union Lane Garage) at 8:30am. We anticipate returning to campus around 2:00pm.

It was brought to our attention that the Baltimore Marathon was scheduled for the original date of this event (Oct. 13). Join Graduate Student Life for the Tony-award winning musical Avenue Q. It tells the story of Princeton, a bright-eyed college grad who comes to New York City with big dreams and a tiny bank account. He soon discovers that the only neighborhood in his price range is Avenue Q, where he soon meets a variety of weird and wonderful friends and neighbors. We have 38 tickets available in the front mezzanine, and they will be on sale for just $40 ($86.50 value).

Read this information before proceeding to the ticket reservation/waitlist process.
Due to a high level of interest anticipated for this event, we will be using a ticket reservation system, followed by a separate payment process.
- We will take online reservations for the 38 available tickets on a first-come, first-serve basis, based on transaction completion time. After all the tickets have been reserved, students may sign up on a waitlist.
- Reservations are NOT a guarantee that you have tickets. Please note that while the website might indicate there are tickets available when you begin to fill out your sign-up form, if multiple people are logged on and submit their forms before you, it is possible that no tickets will be available by the time you complete your form. In such a circumstance, you will be automatically put on the waitlist in order of your transaction completion time.
- Those who are first to reserve the 38 available tickets will be notified by email to complete a separate payment process (payable by credit card only; purchases are non-refundable). Payments must be completed within 72 hours of notification or the reservation will be canceled. The tickets will then be offered to the next person on the waitlist.
- If a student on the waitlist is offered tickets, s/he will be instructed to fill out an online reservation form and complete payment online within 72 hours of notification.
- Those who have purchased tickets will be notified when the tickets will be ready for pick-up. Tickets must be picked up in person by the student who reserved and purchased them; ID is required. Tickets cannot be mailed or delivered day-of the event. The tickets will be available for pick-up at the Office of Campus Programs in 0110 Stamp Student Union, Monday-Friday, 10:00am-4:00pm, after GSL has sent notification.

3. If tickets for this event become available, the next individual on the waitlist will be contacted by email and offered the tickets. S/he will be instructed to fill out an online reservation form and complete payment online within 72 hours of notification. After 72 hours, the ticket offer is no longer valid, and the tickets will be offered to the next person on the waitlist.

International Spy Museum Tour

Ever wondered what it would be like to be a spy? Do you
love spy "who-done-its" from film noir and the
movies, or spy page-turners from literature? Perhaps you
have a fascination with history and a desire to learn secrets
behind world events?
Learn about the authentic tradecraft that has been used
throughout time and around the world. Join Graduate Student
Life for a tour of the International Spy Museum on Saturday,
July 21 at 11:00am. The tour lasts about 2 hours; afterwards,
we’ll have lunch at Gallery Place. Graduate Student
Life has reserved a limited number of tickets and
will be selling them for $8 each ($16 face value). Note
that tickets are date and time-specific. Grad students are
permitted to purchase one additional ticket for a guest.

Screen on the Green: "Wait Until Dark"

Meet at College Park Metro Station at 4:30pm
Cost: FREE
Join Graduate Student Life on Monday, July 30, for a popular
DC summer pastime, Screen on the Green, a free movie showing
on the National Mall. Bring a blanket, your favorite snacks,
and some friends to see the classic suspense film, “Wait
Until Dark,” starring Audrey Hepburn. The movie starts
at sunset (around 8:00pm), but you have to arrive early
to stake out a good seat.
We’ll meet at the Navy Archives metro station
at 5:00pm and then walk to the Mall together. The event
is free, but please RSVP to Laura Polk at lpolk2@umd.edu
and include your department and how many guests you plan
to bring (there is no limit).

From museum tours and musicals, to sporting events and hiking trips, these events showcase the best that the DC-Maryland-Virginia area has to offer. Events are either free or offered at a much reduced cost. You can meet other graduate students from across campus, make new friends, and enjoy taking a break from your studies.

How
to Sign Up for a Grad Social Event
HOW TO PURCHASE: Tickets for social events may be purchased online through the link provided in the event description. Those who have registered for and purchased tickets for an event will receive additional information via email.
Note: Online ticket sales are NOT available on Sundays beginning at 1:00am until Mondays at 7:00am.
HOW TO PICK UP PURCHASED TICKETS:
Those who have already purchased tickets online may pick up their physical tickets at the Office of Campus Programs in 0110 Stamp Student Union Monday-Friday, 10:00am-4:00pm. You must bring an ID with you. Ticket sales will not be available in person.
WAITLIST INFORMATION: Once tickets for an event sell out, the online registration form will become a waitlist sign-up form. If additional tickets become available, those on the waitlist will be contacted in the order in which they signed up. You will not need to make any payment until you agree to purchase tickets that have become available. Please note: there is no guarantee that tickets will be come available after an event sells out.
ELIGIBILITY: You must be a currently registered UMCP graduate student to participate in
a GSL-sponsored event.
You will be required to log in with your directory ID and password; your status as a graduate student will be checked before you will be able to purchase tickets.
GUEST POLICY:
You may bring one non-UMD graduate student as a guest.
FORMS TO COMPLETE: When purchasing your ticket online, you will be asked to provide information about yourself and your graduate academic program. Some events will require an additional
liability release form.
PAYMENT: Payments must be made by credit
card online. Tickets are NOT refundable.
