The Lyceum Dinner Series
was created to foster conversations among graduate students about
issues that affect their quality of life. The dinners occur twice
a year and free of charge with an RSVP due to limited space (typically
30 seats). The format typically consists of an hour-long question
and answer session with an invited panel followed by another hour
of dinner and more informal conversation.
2005-2006 Academic Year Schedule
Wednesday, April 26: "FINDING BALANCE WITH FAMILY, RELATIONSHIPS, WORK, AND/OR CLASSES"
This lyceum dinner will take place from
6:30-8:30pm on Wednesday, April 26th in the Pyon Su Room of the Stamp Student Union (2nd floor). The first
hour will consist of either a speaker or a panel and
the last hour will include a dinner (free!) and time
to interact with the speaker or panelists. The
panel or speaker will cover the topic that affects
many people while in graduate school- finding
balance in their lives! More information will come
with more details and information on how to sign
up. Please feel free to contact Paige Haber with
any questions that you may have at
phaber@umd.edu.
Dec. 7: "How to be Financially Responsible when Financially Strapped"
To try to make ends meet while pursuing our greater goals, many of us are living on graduate stipends and/or working part-time or full time. On Wednesday, December 7, a licensed financial investment specialist from Wachovia Bank will speak about different ways to be fiscally smart with even the most limited funds and school loans. There will also be the opportunity to ask specific questions about investing and saving. And what is smarter than learning about finances over a free dinner?!
The event on December 7 will take place from 4:30-6:30 in the Pyon Su Room at the Stamp Student Union.
Space is limited and will be reserved on a first-come basis so please RSVP to Jessica at jcorlett@umd.edu as soon as possible.
2004-2005 Academic Year Schedule

Can I Get the Government to Give Me Money?"

on his suit who helps people find “Free Government Money!”,

experience working to make often hidden money more accessible to
the public. At this event, he will talk directly to the needs of
us graduate students.

Union

Dec. 3rd: “So,
I’ve Gotten In, I’m Getting Through, but What Does It
All Mean for When I Get Out?”
You may find yourself asking this question, as you work on those
many papers and prepare for the multitude of exams. The Lyceum Dinner
Series is hoping to help you answer it by presenting speakers who
will address how to secure external funding to expand on the research
you are doing now, support field work and help with internships.
They will also give advice on how to advance your non-academic and
academic careers while still in school like how to publish, network,
and make your assistantships count. The panel presentation will
be followed by an informal dinner in which the speakers will join
so you may continue the discussion in a more intimate setting. Take
this time out to remind yourself what this experience is all about.
